دعوة للتأمل في دلالات الأحداث من خلال قراءة متعمقة لصفحات من الدبلوماسية العربية وخبراتها ومواقفها. حيث تستنبط سنن الدبلوماسي في حسن السلوك والرشد السياسي. خاصة بعد أن أصبحت الدبلوماسية المعاصرة ليس مجرد حفلات واستقبالات ورياضة تنس أو جولف أو سيارات فارهة وسياحة بين عواصم العالم ومجتمعاته الراقية، أو مفاوضات سرية ومهام غامضة ساحرة وغرف مغلقة... الخ بل تغيرت مفاهيمها وأدواتها وطبيعتها، وزادت أعباؤها وتحدياتها ومخاطرها.
لقد حاول المؤلف نفض الغبار عن صفحات من الخبرات والأحداث في محاولة لتشكيل مادة للعبرة والتأمل، ووضع بعض المؤشرات والإشارات حتى لا تزيغ أبصار دبلوماسي عربي ناشئ، فتظل خطاه على طريق الحياة وخدمة الوطن.
فبدأ الكتاب بتمهيد عرفنا فيه بالمتغيرات الجارية في البيئة الدولية، وتأثيراتها على طبيعة الدبلوماسية وأنواعها وأدواتها وأساليبها، مع الإشارة إلى أبرز التحديات التي ستواجهها الدبلوماسية العربية في هذا العالم المتغير.
وبدلاً من التحدث المباشر عن صفات الدبلوماسي ووجباته، عمدنا إلى التركيز أساساً على عدد من المسائل الدبلوماسية والتجارب العملية والتي من خلالها تستنبط السنن اللازمة للدبلوماسي الماهر، ويسلط الضوء على صفحات دبلوماسية من الخبرات والمواقف، في محاولة لجذب الاهتمام بدلالات الأحداث ومعالجتها، فتفعل الدبلوماسية العربية المستقبلية فعلها، وتكون "كالشموع إذا لم تكن هادية بضوئها فهي كالعدم...".
