رغم غرابة أطواره، المتمثلة في هدوءه المستفز وألغازه التي بدت أكثر ملاءمة لينطقها لسان أحد المختلين، إلا أن شيئا ما مازلت أجهله دفعني للاستمرار.. شيء لم أعلم يوما حقيقة هويته، رغم كل ما مضى من سنوات على جلستنا الأولى. لم يكن أمامي الا الانصياع لرغبته الغريبة تلك (هكذا بدت لي حينها)، أشار إليّ بنظره إلى رف خشبي، في مكتبة توشك أن تنهار، يجاورها بيانو قديم رابض ككهف مهجور فى حضن جبل تسكنه الأشباح، على جانب الرف تربعت رقعة شطرنج شاخت قطعها بشيبة التراب. التقطتها ببطء حرصا على عدم الدخول في أي شجار مع ترابها، إلا أنه كان مصمما على خوض المعركة. كحة استمرت ثوانٍ، أتبعتها بإزالة آثار التراب من على ملابسي، قبل أن أضع الرقعة على طاولة بيننا
