في هذا الكتاب، يروي لنا المؤلف قصة الشهور التي أمضاها مغامراً على الضفاف الجنوبية للبحر الأحمر حوالي عام 1914، ما بين القرن الإفريقي وشبه الجزيرة العربية. يبدأ مونفريد، وهو الأرستقراطي الفرنسي الذي هجر حياة البذخ التي كان يعيشها، مغامراته في صيد اللؤلؤ على ظهر قاربه الشراعي المحلي، ثم لا يلبث أن يتحول إلى تهريب الأسلحة. في تلك البقعة النائية من العالم، التي كانت تتنازعها قوى استعمارية عديدة، فرنسية وبريطانية وإيطالية وتركية وألمانية، يكتشف الكاتب عالماً أسطورياً في طبيعته وسكانه. لقد برع مونفريد في تصوير تلك البيئة الفريدة في جمالها ووحشيتها وفي عذوبتها وقسوتها كما برع في رسم صورة حية لسكانها الأفذاذ بعاداتهم وتقاليدهم وطرق عيشهم. وبالقدر الذي أحب فيه هذه البيئة الطبيعية والسكانية البكر، بقدر ما بغض الوجود الاستعماري ورموزه التي فضح فسادها وانحطاطها فعانى من جراء ذلك الأمرين.
لقد أوحى هذا العمل الأدبي الرائع إلى بعض صانعي الأفلام بفكرة تحويله إلى فيلم روائي عرض في السنوات الأخيرة في دور السينما، وكذلك بنشر ريبورتاج تلفزيوني عرضته أكثر من قناة.
