يتناول الكتاب دراسة "سيكولوجية الحياة الزوجية" على ضوء العوامل النفسية اللاشعورية والتي تحكم بنية العلاقة بين الشريكين من ناحية، وبينهما وبين أولادهما من ناحية أخرى.
يُمضي الرجل والمرأة مدة نصف قرن تقريباً من الحياة المشتركة بعد أن يكونا قد إتحدا وقررا العيش سوياً. وفي هذه المرحلة، يُطلب منهما تقديم كل ما من شأنه أن يكون موضوع رغبة على الصعيد العاطفي، والتآلف، والتقارب الفكري، وتقسيم العمل، والتربية المشتركة للأطفال، والتمتع الجنسي. وهذه المواضيع لا يمكن إشباعها إلا ضمن إطار العلاقة الثنائية المنظمة.
إن العلاقة الزوجية، وعبر الإشباعات التي تؤمنها لكل شريك، يمكن أن تُهدد الهوية الذاتية للأشخاص الضعفاء نفسياً: عندما يشعر أحد الشريكين أن شريكه الآخر بدأ يتطفل عليه-بأن يتدخل في شؤونه-فإنه يبدأ لا شعورياً بالتهرّب منه ويتوقف الميل الإيروسي نحوه: إن المغامرات العاطفية والجنسي، خارج إطار العلاقة الزوجية، التي يلجأ إليها الشريك الذي شعر بالاجتياح يجب أن لا تُفسَّر بأن الشريك الأصلي قد فقد أهميته، إنما تهدف إلى الهروب من هذا الاجتياح في إطار عملية التماهي الإسقاطي.
