يهدف الباحث من وراء بحثه هذا إلى تحقيق أمرين: الأول تعريف طالب العلم بطريقة الحكم على أسانيد الأحاديث في الكتب الستة عبر المنهجية التي وضعها ابن حجر في كتابه "تقريب التهذيب" ذلك أن هذا الكتاب كما يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه هذا "خلاصة ما توصل إليه ابن حجر من أحكام على رواة الكتب الستة وما ألحق بها، وعصارة فكر متواصل في البحث والدراسة والتحقيق والتحرير مدة زادت على الستين عاماً من حياة عالم موسوعي، ويقظ ذكي".
ولذا فإن المؤلف يرى "أن من تضيع الوقت، وتحصيل الحاصل أن نتجاوز هذا العمل إلى غيره ونتخطى عمل ابن حجر، لنرجع إلى الوراء، لنبحث من جديد أحوال رواة أشبعوا كلاماً وتحريراً".
والمؤلف يغمز برفق بكلامه هذا في المنهج الذي ينادي به بعض الذين اتجهوا إلى دراسة الأسانيد والحكم عليها ممن لم ترسخ أقدامهم بعد في هذا المضمار بالرجوع في الحكم على الرجال إلى البدايات الأولى، ليجتهدوا في ذلك اجتهاد الأمام أحمد وابن معين والبخاري وغيرهم من أئمة هذا الشأن.
وقد أجهد المؤلف نفسه في تحقيق مراد ابن حجر من المراتب التي وضعها للرواة، فإن ابن حجر وإن حدد مراتب الرواة إلا أنه كما يقول الباحث-لم يبين مراده بهذه المراتب، كما لم يبين حكم كل مرتبة منها، والسبب في ذلك أن من صنف لهم كانوا يفهمون مراده من هذه الأحكام. وقد أضحى بيان مراد ابن حجر من المراتب التي حددها في غاية الأهمية، لأن كثيراً من الباحثين اليوم- وهذا هو الهدف الثاني للمؤلف-فهموها على غير وجهها.
