"إعرف نفسك" هذه العبارة نقشت بأحرف من ذهب فوق مدخل هيكل دلفس في اليونان، واتخذها سقراط (469-399 ق.م) شعاراً له وأساساً لفلسفته، حيث حاول من خلالها تحليل الطبيعة البشرية ومعرفة حقيقة الإنسان، ومنذ ذلك الوقت وحتى يومنا هذا ما زال الإنسان يبحث عن حقيقة نفسه، وربما سيظل كذلك إلى أبد الدهر. ذلك أن الإنسان كائن شديد التعقيد ميّزه الخالق بميزات عديدة، وجعله خليفته في الأرض، وأمر الملائكة أن تسجد له احتراماً وتقديراً. فمن هو هذا "الإنسان"؟ ومم يتكون؟ إنه عبارة عن جسم وعقل أو هو جسم وروح. ونظراً لأن التعرف على العقل أو الروح من اختصاص الدراسات الفلسفية وعلوم ما وراء الطبيعة، فقد اكتفى المؤلف في هذا الكتاب بالحديث عن مكونات جسم الإنسان كجزء من البحث الدائم عن تفسير المقولة الخالدة: إعرف نفسك وفي سياق حديث المؤلف عن جسم الإنسان، تطرق إلى كيفية محافظة الفرد على هذا الجسم ورعايته، وكيف يحميه من الأذى ويلبي حاجاته بشكل معقول ومتوازن، كما وأشار إلى كيفية عمل كل عضوٍ من أعضاء الجسم بشكل سليم وكيفية تحاشي كل ما يضرّ به أو يخلّ بوظيفته. وبشكل عام يتوجه هذا الكتاب إلى كل أم وأب ومعلم وإلى كل شاب وشابة جاوز الثانية عشرة من عمره. وهذا التوجه هو ما دعا المؤلف إلى تزويد كتابه بكثير من الأشكال البيانية والرسومات التوضيحية، كما دعاه إلى التبسيط والبعد عن التعمق والتفصيل تمشياً مع الغرض التثقيفي العام الذي قصد إليه الكتاب.
