لقد أخذت على نفسي، أن أتحدث عن "المعتقدات والإيديولوجيات" أكثر من الحديث عن العقائد، وهذا يعني أن أبرز صلة الحادث الديني بالمجتمعات المعاصرة، وأن أشير إلى المتاعب أو الاهتمامات السياسية والأخلاق أكثر من الإشارة إلى التاريخ "الموضوعي". ولا شك أن خطر "النظرة الذاتية" يبدو واضحاً… وإذا نحن أصغينا لكلام أصحاب الشأن، مثل آيات الله أو المناضلين، فإننا، بالبداهة، نغامر بتقييم حديثهم تقييماً عالياً، وتقديم عرض لحقيقة هي حقيقتهم، على حين أن مختلف الظروف التي يمكن أن تكشف عن خطئها، تظل في إطار الظل… ولقد وجد من يتهم المستشرقين، أو علماء السياسية، بتعظيم قيمة هذ الصورة الثقافية، من المنطق، التي تدعي القدرة على توضيح الأحداث، من خلال بنى إيديولوجية قائمة من قبل: وهكذا فإن المجتمعات تكون، بمعنى ما، معدة سلفاً لقيام دولة من نوع ما، وأن الأحداث التي تقع-مهما تكن تعيسة-تبدو وكأنها محتومة لا مجال لتجنبها.. إن كل هذه الصورة من النقاش تظل مفتوحة. وهي ترغمنا على الاستماع لأحاديث آيات الله بحذر. ولكنها لا تمنعنا من الإصغاء إليها.
