مقطعاً وراء مقطع، وفصلاً بعد فصل، يشعر القارئ أحياناً أن المحقق أنطونيو بونتي، وهو "التحري غير الرسمي الوحيد في العالم، وأرفع سلطة في مجال التحري..." يقف عاجزاً أمام ألغاز إختفاء كنز أغرا، المفقود، أو المسروق، أو المدفون، في مكان لا يبدو أن أحداً يعرف مكانه على وجه التحديد، أو يعرف كيف سرق من مكمنه الأصلي عبر المحيطات... وأخيراً كيف تم الفرار به متجدداً في ذلك السباق الماراتوني البحري بمركب بخاري لا تضاهى سرعته.
قصته سيظل ذويُّ أحداثها يتردّد في أرجاء ذهن القارئ زمناً غير قصير.
