يشغل النحو حيزاً كبيراً من المعارف العربية، وإن المكتبة النحوية القديمة حافلة بالمصنفات التي شغلت عصوراً عدة، فكثرت الشروح واتسع نطاق البحث، ولما كان النحو من لوازم الثقافة الإسلامية كثر طلابه المنقطعون له، المشتهرون به، كما كثر المحتاجون إليه من أصحاب العلوم المختلفة. وكان عسيراً على طلاب النحو أن يتزودوا بهذه المادة لكثرة مسائلها ووعورة مسالكها، وأنهم ملزمون بمعرفة الأساليب النحوية التي لم تسلم إلى النحو وحده، بل استعارت أساليب أهل المنطق وعلماء الكلام.
وقد ورث أهل هذا العصر هذه المادة الضخمة المعقدة، وطلب إليهم أن يأخذوها ويفهموها على نحو ما كان يفهم أهل القرون المتقدمة أساليبها، وكان النحو عند جمهرة كبيرة من المعنيين بعلوم العربية، علم اكتملت أدواته ولم يترك الأقدمون منه بقية للدارسين من بعدهم. وهو لذلك علم لا يمكن لأهل هذا العصر أن ينالوا منه أو يبدلوا فيه شيئاً.
ومن أجل ذلك فلم يستطع أهل التيسير والداعين للإصلاح أن يقيموا بناء نحوياً جديداً يتنكر للقديم، ومن المعلوم أم "النحو" في بداية نشأته كان نتيجة تفكير الأقدمين في إيجاد ضوابط تعمل على صيانة العربية من اللحن ولا سيما كتاب الله الكريم، وعلى هذا فإن الغرض الأول من وضع الضوابط النحوية كان تعليمياً، وهو أن يكون كافياً للحاجة التي جدت في المجتمع العربي بعد أن دخل فيه الكثير من الأمم التي اعتنقت الإسلام.
غير أن هذا الغرض التعليمي قد تجووز إلى شيء آخر فأصبح النحو غرضاً يطلبه الدارسون كما يطلبون سائر العلوم الأخرى. وكثر طلاب النحو منذ نشأته فكانت طبقات النحاة المختلفة المتعاقبة طوال العصور، وقد أضافت القرون المتلاحقة الشيء الكثير إلى مادة النحو وأساليب الدرس فيه حتى انتهى إلى ما انتهى إليه، والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يعرض للنحو العربي القديم، فيبين ما فيه مما هو غريب عن المادة اللغوية، وهدفه حمل الدارسين أن يكتبوا نحواً جديداً يعين الناشئة على فهم هذه اللغة الكريمة.
