اتصف العلامة المحدث الشيخ محيي الدين الطعمي بكثرة تصانيفه في علم الطبقات، وفي علم الرجال، فكان له تآليف في طبقات المتصوفة رجال ونساء نذكر منها طبقات الأوتاد، طبقات النساء المتصوفات، طبقات من رأى الخضر، طبقات الشاذلية الكبرى، طبقات الأقطاب، طبقات المجاذيب، الناموس في معرفة أولياء الروس، تسلية العشاق في معرفة أولياء العراق، الموطأ الجامع لأولياء طنطا، العقد الفريد في معرفة أولياء الصعيد، ديوان أولياء الأمة المحمدية الجامع لفهارس ومختصرات الكتب التي ترجمت للصوفية، معجم كرامات الصحابة. طبقات أهل البيت، طبقات أقطاب الظاهر والباطن. وأخيراً ألقى رحاله في رحاب الأزهر، فألف في رجاله، جامعاً نبلاء أعيانه. فصنف هذه الطبقات افتخاراً برجال سموا فوق الثريا، وطار مجدهم في الآفاق، وذاع صيتهم في الأرجاء. وسماه "النور الأبهر في طبقات شيوخ الجامع الأزهر".
