يعالج هذا القسم وهو الثاني العشر من مرآة الزمان لمؤلفه يوسف بن قنهاوغلي مرحلة سادها الصراع بين قوى الشرق الأوسط، حيث أخذ السلاجقة في الظهور، ثم تابعوا تصاعدهم حتى انسابت القوى الجديدة في العراق وبلاد الروم، في حين قامت إمارات عربية في إقليم الجزيرة تحاول الحفاظ على استقلالها الذاتي باللعب على التناقضات مستغلة ضعف اليويهيين وتفرق شملهم وتقلص سيطرتهم.
وفي الوقت عينه كانت الخلافة الفاطمية قد قامت في شمال إفريقيا وانتقلت إلى مصر في العقد السادس من القرن الرابع للهجرة، ومارست ضغوطاً شديدة، عسكرية ودبلوماسية، للسيطرة على بلاد الشام، وترافقت هذه الضغوط بدعاية عقائدية واسعة لنشر العقيدة الإسماعيلية، في حين كانت الخلافة العباسية تعاني من التمزق على المستويات العقائدية والسياسية والسلطوية.
