الإمام أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل، صاحب مكانة في العلم والفقه وقد انتهى إليه علم عصره. سمع منه خلق كثير وروى عنه جم غفير منهم إسحاق بن منصور الكوسج. وقد جاء ما جمعه متفرقاً في رسائل وكتب حتى فيض الله له من يجمعه في كتاب واحد. وهذا الكتاب الذي تطبع مخطوطته لأول مرة يجمع فتاوى أحمد بن حنبل وأجوبته والمسائل التي اشتملت على أمور كثيرة من الأمور التي صارت مصدراً لمن جاء بعده من العلماء. وقد دون إسحاق هذه المسائل عن الإمام وهو في بغداد وحدث بها بخراسان وقد تلقى العلماء هذه المسائل بالقبول وأنزلوها مكانة خاصة ولم يشكك فيها أحد من الحنابلة أو غيرهم.
وكان إسحاق بن راهوية يسأل الإمام أحمد ويسمع الإجابة ويدونها وبالنظر للأهمية هذه المسائل اعتنى المحققون بتحقيقها معتمدين على ثلاث نسخ خطية هي نسخة المكتبة العمرية، ونسخة دار الكتب الظاهرية، ونسخة دار الكتب المصرية والثالثة كانت عديمة الفائدة إلا في مواضع نادرة يذكرها المحققون فقاموا بنسخ المخطوطتين الأولى والثانية، وأعادوا مقابلة المخطوطتين مع المنسوخ، ورتبوا الكتاب بالصورة التي هو عليها، كما خرجوا الأحاديث والآثار بصورة غير مطولة وعزوا المسائل إلى مصادرها الأصلية التي تكون قد وردت فيها ثم شرحوا الكلمات الغريبة وقاموا بإعداد فهارس شاملة للكتاب تشمل فهرس المسائل الفقهية، وفهرس الأعلام، وفهرس الفوائد اللغوية، وفهرس الموضوعات. وقد حاول فريق العمل تجنب الإطالة فلم يثقلوا الحواشي بالإشارات غير الضرورية.
