إن العلاقات التي تتسم بالعنف تبدأ كغيرها من العلاقات، بالقبل، الأزهار، والنزهات الطويلة، وما يجعل التعرف عليها صعباً للغاية، والتخلص منها أكثر صعوبة، هو أنها تبدأ عادة رومانسية، وأحياناً تستمر كعلاقات رومانسية رغم اتسامها بالعنف وهذه بضعة أرقام تقدمها المؤلفة لتوضح مدى انتشار هذه الظاهرة وأشكالها.
شهد عام 1994 أربعة ملايين واقعة عنف عائلي ضد المرأة، 20% من تلك الحوادث أدت إلى إصابات بليغة، ثلث النساء المعالجات في غرف الإسعاف باستمرار، يُنْقلن إليها نتيجة العنف العائلي، 25% من مرضى الاضطرابات النفسية، ومحاولات الانتحار هن من ضحايا العنف، 85% ممن يخضعن لبرامج معالجة ظاهرة العنف، هن ضحايا العنف العائلي، 50% من الأطفال المقيمين في بيوت رعاية الطفولة هم ضحايا العنف العائلي، 70% من حالات الاعتداء، على الأطفال، يرتكبها رجل البيت، 40% من العائلات المستوردة في نيويورك، يفرون من العنف العائلي والتقارير من المدن الأخرى تسجل نسباً متشابهة. وفي هذا الكتاب، ومن موقع عملها كمرشدة اجتماعية، تتحدث الكاتبة من خلال الأرقام والوقائع عن قضية العنف الداخلي التي أصبحت حوادثها تشمل كل طبقات المجتمع. وقسمت الكاتبة موضوعها إلى عدة محاور تناولتها بالبحث والدراسة وكانت عناوينها على الشكل التالي: العنف العائلي، العنف العائلي الحديث، لائحة مرجعية بالأفعال العدوانية، كتب مفيدة في هذا المجال.
