إن الباحث المسلم إذا أراد الإطلاع على مكان وجود حديث في مسند الإمام أحمد بن حنبل ولم يعلم سوى إسم الصحابي الذي روى الحديث فإنه يعجز عن العثور عليه، وإذا كان إسم الصحابي مذكوراً فيجب على الباحث تفتيش جميع مسند ذلك الصحابي وخاصة إذا كان ذلك الحديث مروياً فيه من غير طريق واحد، ومع ذلك ربما لا يراه لأن الإمام رواه في غير مسند ذلك الصحابي ...
ولهذا السبب يضع الأستاذ حمدي عبد المجيد السلفي كتابه "مُرشد المحتار إلى ما في مسند الإمام أحمد بن حنبل من الأحاديث والآثار" وهو بمثابة قاموس شامل للأحاديث والآثار الموجودة في المسند مرتباً على الأحرف الهجائية. وقد جعله في ثلاثة اقسام:
1- "الأحاديث القولية" ويعني بها ما يكون اللفظ من لفظ النبوة.
2- "الأحاديث الفعلية" ويعني بها ما يكون اللفظ من لفظ من دون النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
3- ا لآثار الموقوفة على الصحابة ومن دونهم وما تكلم به الإمام أحمد في حق بعض الرواة أو الأحاديث.
هذا الفهرس، هدية من مؤلفه إلى كل المشتغلين بالسُّنَّة النبوية، ليكون عوناً لهم في الدلالة على موضع الحديث والأثر في المسند.
