شهد النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر اهتمام عدد من الدول الأجنبية بإنشاء مدارس في بلاد الشام في ظل الحكم العثماني لهذه البلاد. وقد امتاز الجهد الروسي في هذا المضمار بإنشاء شبكة من المدارس في فلسطين –الجليل وبيت جالا- وفي كثير من المواقع في لبنان وسورية بلغت 114 مدرسة سنة 1914 تضم 15.000 طالب وطالبة، وتبرز بينها دار للمعلمين في الناصرة، ودار للمعلمات في بيت جالا, وكانت الخطة أن تتحول دار المعلمين في الناصرة إلى جامعة، لكن نشوب الحرب العالمية الأولى أوقف ذلك.
كان لخريجي هذه المعاهد دور مهم في مسيرة النهضة الثقافية العربية عامة، بما تجسد في مساهمة الرابطة القلمية في المهجر التي كان نصف أعضائها منهم.
أما في فلسطين فكانت لهم الريادة في انطلاقة النهضة بعد إعلان الدستور العثماني سنة 1908.
يجمع هذا الكتاب الخيوط لرسم تفصيلات الحدث، ويرصد دور هؤلاء الخريجين في ميادين الصحافة والتربية والترجمة والإبداع الأدبي.
