يتضمن هذا المجلّدُ، إلى جانب قصة "السيد والخادم" التي لعلها أغرب ما كتبه تولستوي في قدرتها الإيحائية والتي تشكل وثيقةً حقيقية من وثائق الأدب العالمي الشامل، مجموعةً من الأقاصيص والحكايات الشعبية التي تتدرّج من 1895 إلى 1909 (أي قبل موت الكاتب بسنة) والتي تنتمي في معظمها إلى النوع التثقيفي الذي تبنّاه مؤلفُ "آنا كارينينا" قبل نحو خمس عشرة سنة، وَلْنُبادرْ إلى القول: إننا أضفنا إليها بعض النصوص التي استلهمها أو حاكى بها مباشرةً كُتاباً آخرين، ولا سيّما "موباسان" مثل "نُزُل وسرات"، و"بوذا"، و"كارما"، و"أربعون عاماً"، و"مفرط الغلاء"، والتي من أجل ذلك أثًبتتْ.
وفي آخر هذا المجلد، مع أنها ألفتْ في فترةٍ أَسبق أحياناً من الحكايات التي تُدعى الحكايات الشعبية، وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة إلى قصة "حياتي" التي ليست من عند تولستوي، لكنها من عند فلاّحةٍ تُدعى "آنيسيا" كانت تسكن آنئذٍ "كوت شاكي" على مقربة من "إيا سنايا بوليانا"، وقد حبرت السرّاء والضراء، ولحقت بزوجها المنفيّ إلى سيبيريا، ثم ترمّلت وانتهت بأن تزوّجت مُستخدم كنيسة القرية، وكانت "آنيسيا" تُحسن القَّص، مثل كثير من الفلاحين الروس، ولذلك فإن أخت الكونتيسة تولستوي، "تاتيانا كوزمنسكي" التي كانت تصغي إليها بسرور، قد جمعت قصتها.
