يدور موضوع الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي هو من تصنيف "عماد الدين الحسن بن علي الطبرسي" حول الإمامة والمسائل المرتبطة بها، كما نص المؤلف على ذلك في ديباجته، ومن هذه المسائل إثبات الإمامة عقلاً ونقلاً، صفات الإمام، بقاء الإمام ببقاء القرآن، عدد الأئمة، غيبة الإمام ورجعته، سيرة الأنبياء في نصب الإمام والخليفة، أساليب تعيين الإمام، مناقب الأئمة وأفضليتهم ونقص الآخرين، فائدة الإمام والإجابة عن الشبهات، وذكر في القسم الأخير من الكتاب الفرق الإسلامية سواءً الأصلية أن الفرعية التي نشأت عن الخلاف في الإمامة.
كما وتوقف الكتاب عند العقائد الصحيحة، بخاصة عقيدة الإمامية، وأثبتها عن طريق الاستدلال بالآيات والأحاديث والبراهين العقلية، وفي الوقت نفسه يحتوي على نقاط ذات قيمة حول تاريخ الإسلام، وقضايا الهجرة، والغدير، السقيفة، والجمل، وصفينه، وأحوال الخلفاء، وعدد من الصحابة، وبعض المنافقين.
على الرغم من عزم المؤلف على ذكر المباحث الاستدلالية في باب الإمامة، إلا أنه أورد نبذة تاريخية موجزة عن مواليد الأئمة عليهم السلام ووفياتهم لمناسبة الموضوع، كما أشار في فصل الفرق والمذاهب إلى أكثر الفرق الإسلامية، والفرق التي كانت قبل الإسلام أيضاً، وتعرّض فيه إلى ترجمة بعض الفلاسفة المسلمين واليونانيين.
