بدأ الباحثون في ميادين علوم الأعصاب وعلوم النفس، منذ حوالي ما يناهز أربعة عقود، في البحث عن مكونات الذاكرة التي تشكل إحدى الوظائف العليا للإنسان.
والذاكرة كما يعرضها المؤلف هي بمثابة نظام لمعالجة المعلومات وهي تشمل ثلاث مراحل هي: التخزين أو الاحتفاظ، والتذكراي الاسترجاع (الاستعادة). والذاكرة الإنسانية من السعة بحيث يمكنها تذكر أكثر من 20-100 ألف كلمة بالإضافة إلى تعلم اللغات المختلفة والعادات اليومية والهوايات وأصول العمل وأداء الواجبات وغيرها من الأحداث والأعمال اليومية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يستعرض المؤلف مكونات الذاكرة ومشاكلها المتعددة، مبيناً أنها تتألف من ثلاثة أجزاء: ذاكرة الحواس، الذاكرة قصير المدى، الذاكرة بعيدة المدى، كما يوضح الطريقة التي تتم بها عملية التذكر وهي سلسلة من العمليات المنطقية تؤدي إلى الاختزال والإبقاء على ما هو جوهري فقط، بواسطة منظومة رمزية مختلفة ومتعددة المعايير.
كما يتحدث المؤلف عن علاقة الذاكرة بالدماغ والفوارق بين الذاكرة الحقيقية الذاكرة الكاذبة. حيث يشدد علماء النفس والأعصاب على أن الذاكرة التي تسترجع بواسطة العلاج أو تلقائياً هي ذاكرة غير حقيقية. كما يعرض أيضاً لفقدان الذاكرة وأمراضها وكيفية تنشيطها وتحسينها وتحفيز الذهن.
