قد يبدو ولأول وهلة أن كتاب "المصباح المضيء" هو كتاب متخصص في التاريخ السياسي ويخص الخليفة "المستضيء بأمر الله" ويتناول أخباره وأفعاله، غير أن الأمر ليس كذلك. فهو كتاب وعظ وتذكير يعالج الأمور السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والأخلاقية وقد اشتمل عدا سير أخبار الخلفاء الذين سبقوا المستضيء بأمر الله منذ زمن الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وحتى عصر المستضيء نفسه الذي عنون الكتاب باسمه، والذي أراد به ابن الجوزي من ذلك حثّ الخليفة وإرشاده على الاقتداء بسير أسلافه السابقين في سياسة البلاد وإدارتها باعتبار أن صلاح المجتمع منوط بصلاح سلطانه.
وتكمن أهمية الكتاب ومؤلفه في كونه نسخة خطية فريدة لم تحظ بالبحث والدراسة والتحقيق من قبل وينفرد مؤلفه في نفط معين من التأليف يُبين فيه قيمة الوعظ والتذكير وله أسلوبه الخاص في تدوين الأحداث. أما على صعيد التحقيق فقد بذلت المحققة "ناحية عبد الله إبراهيم" جهداً كبيراً في تحقيق النص ودراسته، واستطاعت أن تصور الأصالة في المخطوطة، بعد أن قامت بتقديم النص وتصحيحه مستعينة بعدد كبير من أوثق المصادر العربية، المخطوطة منها والمطبوعة.
