يتفق المترجمون لأبي العباس عبد الله بن أحمد بن إبراهيم التميمي الأبياني مصنف هذه الرسالة أنه عاش مائة سنة، غير أن قد اختلفوا في سنة وفاته ما بين 352 و361 هجرية. والأول أرجح ويحيّله البعض بلقب التونسي لأن إبيانه كانت قرية من مدينة تونس، كما أن نشاطه العلمي دراسةً وتدريساً كان في مدينة تونس حتى قال عند الشيرازي (..وبه تفقه أهل بلده بمدينة تونس).
وروى عنه الأصيلي، وأبو الحسن اللواتي، وعبد الله بن أبي رزين، والقابسي وغيرهم كثير.وصفه بعضهم بعالم إفريقية. ووصفه القابسي بقوله: ما رأيت بالمشرق وبالمغرب مثل أبي العباس. وكان يفصل المسألة كتفصيل الجزار الحاذق اللحم. وكان يحب المذاكرة في العلم ويقول: دعونا من السماع وألقوا علينا المسائل. ومعنى هذا أنه لا يميل إلى الإملاء والكتابة بذلك.
ولهذا، وبالرغم من الإفاضة في منزلته العلمية لم يذكروا له كتاباً واحداً عدا هذه الأسئلة المطروحة عليه وأجاب عنها فدونت وتداولها الناس. وهي طريقة كانت شائعة وفي عصره بالذات نذكر في ذلك أحكام السوق ليحيى بن عمر وآداب المعلمين لمحمد بن سحنون، لكن السؤال المطروح هو: من هو هذا السائل الذي سأل الأبياني عن أحكام السمسرة والسماسرة؟ مما لا شد أن أحد طلبته والرواة عنه كان يسأله فيجيب.
