لم يتفق النقاد على مفهوم محدد للمقالة الأدبية، ويعود ذلك إلى تأخر نشأة المقالة قياساً على الفنون الأخرى، وكان ذلك سبباً في أن يتأخر النقاش حول الشكل الفني للمقالة لإستئثار الألوان الأدبية الأخرى باهتمام الدارسين والناقدين.
لأجل ذلك يضع الدكتور "عبد العزيز شرف" كتابه الموسوم بـ "المقالة الأدبية وعصر الاحترام" يتناول فيه خصائص المقالة التي تشمل الإيجاز في كتابتها وإشعار القارئ أنه تجاه حديث ممتع لمحدث لبق يستهويه بحسن عرضه، ورؤيته الخاصة والحرية في تناول الموضوعات في جوَ من الطلاوة وفي أسلوب حرَ من أغلال الصنعة، وعرض سوي شائق يجمع بين دقة الملاحظة وحرارة الفكرة.
ويتناول الكاتب أيضاً المقالة الأدبية الحديثة في أوروبا في القرن السادس عشر الميلادي على يد الكاتب الفرنسي "مونتاني"... وفي هذا السياق يتساءل الكاتب هل يوجد شبيه للمقالة الأدبية الحديثة في تراثنا العربي؟ ويذهب إلى الإجابة عن هذا السؤال بالإيجاب، فهناك الوان أدبية في ذلك التراث لا تختلف كثيراً عن المقالة الأدبية بمفهومها الحديث... بعد ذلك يتطرق الكاتب إلى وظيفة المقالة الدبية في عصرنا الحديث، انطلاقاً من كونها عوامل تنشيط الحركة الفكرية والأدبية. ثم يقدم الكاتب دراسة وظيفته للمقاللة يركز فيها على تعبيرها عن قضية فلسطين، وهي دراسة أكاديمية تؤكد سعي الكتَاب المقاليين وأهل الفكر إلى التعبير عن عصر جديد يستحق أن نطلق عليه "عصر الاحترام".
