تشكل المجموعة التي يضمها هذا الكتاب من أعمال الصادق الزمرلي مرجعاً من المراجع الأساسية بالنسبة لجميع المهتمين بتاريخ الحركة الفكرية في تونس بوجه خاص، والنهضة العربية الحديثة بوجه عام، ومادتها تنقسم على قسمين القسم العربي وهو يضم الفصول التالية: ترجمة المؤلف الجنرال الصادق الزمرلي حياته وآثاره، تقديم لكتاب "أعلام تونسيون"، النص العربي للكلمة التي نشرها الكاتب الفرنسي شارل سوماني في مقدمة كتاب "التابعون"، الدراسة التي أصدرها الجنرال الصادق الزمرلي خلال سنة 1947 في مجلة "المباحث" التونسية في خمس حلقات بعنوان "المغرب في أيان" وهي تكتسي أهمية فائقة باعتبارها الأثر الوحيد المحرر رأساً باللغة العربية.
أما القسم الفرنسي فضم مؤلفات التي حررها المؤلف أساساً من اللغة الفرنسية، كما وضم البحث الذي ألقاه المؤلف في المؤتمر الاستعماري المنعقد بباريس سنة 1908، حول تعليم المرأة المسلمة.
