كلمة مقام في الأصل تستعمل للدلالة على مجموع السلالم الموسيقية التي لكل منها أبعاد مخصوصة بين مختلف درجاتها، لتحدث التأثير المطلوب. وأكثر ما تشيع هذه الكلمة في العراق وإيران، أما في مصر وبلاد الغرب العربي والخليج العربي فيستخدم الفنانون كلمات أخرى للدلالة على هذا المعنى.
وقد اتسع مفهوم كلمة مقام في العراق فأصبحت تدل على التراث الموسيقي الذي يتسم بصبغة ارتجال الغناء والعزف على مختلف السلالم الموسيقية التقليدية بطرق مضبوطة لدى أهل الصناعة. ومع تطور وسائل الإعلام السمعية البصرية وتسهيل المواصلات تغلبت كلمة المقام فصارت تستعمل لدلالة على السلالم الموسيقية المعتمدة في التراث الموسيقي العربي التقليدية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتناول المؤلف هذا الموضوع مع التعرض إلى أسماء السلالم التقليدية المختلفة في البلاد العربية مع مقاربتها بما يوجد منها خارج الوطن العربي. كما يجعل المؤلف لكل مقام سلمه المحلل مع تمرين خاص به يعين الطلاب على تطبيق هذا السلم. كما يورد لكل مقام شاهداً من التراث العربي مرقوماً بالنوطة الموسيقية.
