يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة مقالات ألقيت في قسم الدراسات الفلسفية والاجتماعية في الجامعة اللبنانية بمناسبة الذكرى المثوية للفيسوف الألماني "كانط" ضمن إطار شبه سنوي تقيمه الجامعة في العودة كل سنة إلى فيلسوف معني.
يمكن اعتبار هذا العمل بمثابة مداخلات هامة جاءت في إطار المساجلات بين كانط والمفكرين الآخرين السابقين واللاحقين له. أما أهمية العودة إلى فلسفة كانط في العقود الأخيرة، ولا سيما في مجال الأخلاق جاءت في شمولية فكره وإنسجامها مع قضايا معاصرة في زمننا هذا، فالجميع في أمس الحاجة اليوم لإرساء الفكر على معايير العقل والحكمة التي أرساها كانط إلا أن المفكرين المشاركين لم يكتفوا بجانب واحد وإنما ركزوا على جوانب أخرى. فركز الدكتور "جورج زيناتي" بشكل مختصر على الجوانب السياسية واعتبرها صنواً للأخلاق في أبعادها الملازمة لمسائل الخير والشر، أما في مجال الترجمة فبرز اسم الباحثة "عاهدة طالب الأمين" و "سعاد حرب" ومن الزوايا نفسها عالج د. "جميل قاسم" مسألة الأنوار في فلسفة كانط، أما د. "فضل الله ميرة" فاستعاد الجدل حول الزمان والمكان وهي مقولات أساسية عند كانط ارتبطت بالفلسفة التجريبية، أما الدكتور "حسن الحاج" فقد عاد بنا إلى ميتافيزيقيا الأخلاق من خلال البحث في العقل العملي، رابطاً بين الأخلاق والماورائيات.
أما أهم ما اكتشفه العميد الدكتور "جورج كتوره" في فلسفة كانط تلك الروح العلمية القائمة على رفض الاسطورة واعتناق الحرية التي تكمل الإرادة فيقول: "لم نستفد من جعل الإنسان، الإنسان العاقل، السياسي والحكيم والعالم معياراً لنا. فما زال معيارنا في مكان آخر، إن لم نجازف اليوم بصنع التنوير الذي نستحق لن يكون لنا نهضة (...) لأن نهضة لا تصنع تاريخاً تموت في التاريخ".
