في هذه المقالات قد كتبتُ أشياء في النقد، وأخرى في التعقيب على ما قاله كتاب كرام، ورأيتني أيضاً قد كتبتُ آرائي الشخصية فيما عنًّ لي من مسائل في الأدب، ووجدتُني أكتب انطباعاتي عن أساتذة أجلاًء أفدتُ من علومهم، وألفيتُني في كلّ هذا وذاك امرءاً لا يخلو من تناقض، أو ما يُظنُّ أنه تناقض.
ولم يكن الأمرُ الذي بدا تناقضاً كذلك، ولا هو بشبيهه لولا تباعد أزمان الكتابة.
هذا وقد كان بإمكاني أن أعدل ما كنت قد قلته بما أرضاه اليوم، ولكنني رأيت في التعديل خيانة لتطور الأفكار، وتأريخها، فكان من رأيي ألاً أمسّ شيئاً قلتُه.
وأبعدتُ عن الترتيب في هذا الكتاب مقالتي "النجف مدينة السخرية والعِلم والتناقض"، فقرّرت أن أفتتح بها الكتاب وكان يدعوني إلى هذا الافتتاح دواعٍ منها:
أنها ليست مدينتي فحسب أحبّها كما يحب كلّ امرىء مسقط رأسه، وإنّما هي مدينةٌ تاريخية، بكل ما في التاريخ من معنى. ولو لم يكن من تاريخها إلاّ أنها أنجبت من الأسرة الشبيبية: الشيخ جواد، ومحمد باقر، ومحمد رضا، وأنها أنجبت الجواهري وجمال الدين، والصافي النجفي لكان في ذلك الكفاية، وما هو فوق الكفاية.
هذا ولم أشأ أن أُعدّد أسماء من أنجبتهم من فقهاء خيفة أن أنسى اسم واحدٍ منهم.
