عنوان الكتاب "كمبادئ" يشير غلى أن الكتاب يحوي في مقدمته الأسس التي تمثل الأرضية أو القاعدة التي يقف عليها دارس هذا العلم ويبني عليها أفكاره في إطار منطقي. وإلحاق لفظة الاقتصاد بالمبادئ هو مقصود، فالاقتصاد كعلم أشمل من النظرية الاقتصادية التي تمثل محور الاهتمام الأول في الدراسة الحالية. أما المحور الثاني فهو التطبيقات المرتبطة بالنظرية والتي تعد بحق جزء لا يجب فصله أبدا عن النظرية باعتبارهما جزءان مكملان لبعضهما، فالتطبيقات تقرب وتشرح وتفسر ما تم تقريره في النظرية في دنيا الواقع الذي نعايشه.
والإشارة إلى أن هذا المؤلف هو الكتاب الأول ينصرف بالضرورة إلى وجود مؤلف تالي له تستكمل به أصول أو مبادئ علم الاقتصاد. والمؤلف الحالي تم تخصيصه للاقتصاد الوحدي أما المؤلف التالي والمكمل فهو الاقتصاد الجمعي. هذا الترتيب قصد منه توفير خلفية قريبة من واقع الدارس، فالاقتصاد الوحدي يعني بدراسة وتفسير وشرح سلوك الوحدة الاقتصادية الفردية، محور هذا السلوك هو الفرد والدارس، فاقتراب الدارس من المدروس مصدرة طبيعة ما يدرس.
