منذ السنوات الأولى لعمله مراسل حرب في فيتنام، كان بيلجر ناقدًا قويًا للسياسة الأمريكية والبريطانية الخارجية، والتي اعتبرها مدفوعة من البرنامج الإمبريالي.

يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوء على السلطة وخفاياها وأوهامها. ويوضح طبيعة الإمبريالية الحديثة, وهو يكشف كيف قتل نحو مليون إندونيسي ثمناً لكي تصبح إندونيسياً "التلميذ النموذجى" للبنك الدولي، والثمن الذي دفعه شعب العراق في الحصار الذي فرضه عليه الغرب لأكثر من عقد من الزمن. ويعرّج على أستراليا لينظر خلف المظهر البرّاق الذي أدّى إلى إجراء الألعاب الأولمبية الألفية في سيدني ويتأمل في القهر المتواصل الذي يتعرض له سكّانها الأصليون. كما يصف الاندفاعة الجديدة للقوة الأميركية وهدفها من "النظام العالمي" في أعقاب هجمات 11 أيلول/سبتمبر على الولايات المتحدة فضلاً عن الإعلام الذي يبررها ويقودها.
