يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوعاً جديداً بالنسبة لغيره من الكتب التي ظهرت حتى الآن تحت عنوان المساجد، سواءً باللغة العربية أو بغيرها من اللغات الأجنبية الأخرى.
هناك العديد من الكتب التي ألفها علماء مختصون بالآثار العربية والإسلامية، وفيها دراسات وبحوث مفيدة في موضوع المساجد، بيد أن هذه الكتب، في الغالب، أعطتنا معلومات تاريخية حول بعض المساجد الهامة عند المسلمين، وبصورة خاصة المساجد الأولى والرئيسية في الإسلام، مثل المسجد الحرام بمكة المكرمة والمسجد النبوي بالمدينة المنورة والمسجد الأقصى بمدينة القدس.
كما أن بعض المؤلفين حصروا مادة كتبهم في بعض المعالم التي يتكون منها المسجد، مثل: المئذنة، والمحراب، والقبة، والمنبر، وقدموا لنا في هذه الكتب النواحي الفنية والتاريخية المتعلقة بالعالم المذكورة.
وهناك مؤلفون كانت كتبهم عبارة عن قوائم إحصائية بأسماء المساجد المشهورة في العالم، ومعها الرسوم والصور العائدة لها، أما الكتاب فقد درس المسجد من خلال حالاته وتحوّلاته عبر تاريخ المسلمين من حين ظهور الإسلام حتى اليوم، ويقصد بهذه الحالات والتحوّلات الأطوار المعمارية التي رافقت إنشاء المساجد منذ أن كانت بدايتها الساذجة، والغرض منها قاصراً على إحتواء الناس ليقيموا فيها الصلاة إلى أن تنامى تطورها من الناحيتين المعمارية والتصميمية وأُريد بها العبادة والتكامل الفني في آن واحد.
