هذا كتاب مانع نادر يكشف شيوخ الإمام أبو محمد عبد الله بن وهب المصري، الذين روى عنهم، وسمع منهم وذكر تخريج من خرج منهم وتعديله مما وقع في كتاب أبي عبد الله محمد بن وضاح مع أخبار ابن وهب، وفضله، وزهده، وسبب وفاته.
هذا وقد اعتمد فيه مصنفه ابن بشكوال على كتاب الإمام الحافظ الناقد محمد بن وضاح القرطبي شيخ الأندلس وإمامها ومحدثها، وهو بدوره قد استفاد أيضاً من كتاب ألفه الإمام الحافظ الفقيه أبو الطاهر أحمد بن عمرو بن السرح المصري، الذي كان ملازماً لابن وهب، وصنف كتاباً في شيوخ ابن وهب من أهل مصر، نقل منه ابن يونس في تاريخه، كما أنه شرح موطأ شيخه ابن وهب. وقام ابن وضاح كذلك بعرض كتابه هذا على الإمام الحافظ الناقد أبي جعفر أحمد بن سعد بن الحكم بن أبي مريم المصري، صاحب الإمام يحيى بن معين، وأحمد من نقل عنه مسائله في الجرح والتعديل.
فهذا الكتاب الجليل إنما هو في الحقيقة نتاج جهود هؤلاء الأئمة بدءاً بأبي الطاهر وابن أبي مريم، ومروراً بابن وضاح، وانتهاء بابن بشكوال.
