تأتي أهميّة هذا الكتاب من كونه أوّل الشروح لِكتاب الفصول في النّحو، لابن معط، ويعد هذا الكتاب من أكثر الكتب التي تأثّر بها العلماء بعد ابن إياز فنقلوا عنه، منهم الزركشي، فقد نقل عنه في البحر المحيط في أصول الفقه أربعة مواضيع، وابن هشام في المغني، وشرح الشذور، والمرادي في توضيح المقاصد، والجنى الداني، والأشموني، والسيوطي في الهمع والأشباه، والمزهر، والبغدادي في الخزانة، وغيرهم.
وقد عاش ابن إياز في القرن السابع، وهو قرنٌ زاخرٌ بالعلماء، ففيه ابن يعيش، وابن الحاجب، وابن مالك، وابن الخباز، وابن فلاح، والرضي، وغيرهم، ولا شكّ أنّه بد استفاد من علمهم، ومصنّفاتهم، ولعلّ نظرةً للمصادر التي ذكرها ابن إياز في المحصول تجعلك تدرك سعة إطلاع ابن إياز، ومدى استفادته من علماء عصره.
ويعد هذا الكتاب واحداً من أهم الكتب التي اهتمت بالتعليل النحويّ، فالتعليل كان عندهم وسيلة من وسائل فهم القاعدة النحويّة، فابن إياز كان حريصاً على التعليل عند وجود أيّ حكم نحويّ، ولذا قال فيه أبو حيان: إنّه أبو تعاليل، فأهميّة هذا الكتاب أولاً تأتي من هذا الوجه، وهو من أهم ما دفعني لإخراجه.
