تعد مدينة البصرة من أهم الأمصار الإسلامية، فهي أول مدينة تُبنى على طراز العمارة الإسلامية، وغدت البوابة لفتوح المشرق، فمنها تجهز الجيوش الإسلامية لنشر الدين الإسلامي في ربوع الشرق، وغدا والي البصرة مسؤولاً عن مدن الشرق والخليج، وهو مسؤول أمام الخليفة سواء أكان في المدينة أو الكوفة أو دمشق أو الهاشمية أو بغداد أو سامراء. فضلاً عن ذلك أدت البصرة دوراً واضحاً في الحياة السياسية والإقتصادية والإجتماعية والفكرية طوال العصور التاريخية.
ومن المعلوم أن أمير المؤمنين الإمام علي عليه السلام أول خليفة تحط قدماه الشريفة مدينة البصرة، ورغم أن مكوث أمير المؤمنين لم يطل في البصرة لكنه ترك آثاراً بعيدة المدى على المجتمع البصري، ومن أهم تلك الآثار التي نتجت عن قدومه للبصرة هي الحركة الفكرية، إذ غدت مدينة البصرة في مقدمة المدن الإسلامية اهتماماً بالعلم والمعرفة، ومنها كانت باكورة الكثير من العلوم كعلوم اللغة، والنحو، والأدب، والكلام، ومنها كانت الريادة في المدارس الفكرية التي من أهمها مدرسة الإعتزال التي نشأت في البصرة أولاً ثم في بغداد. وكانت مدرسة الإعتزال تهتم بدراسة المسائل العقائدية، ومنها الإمامة التي شغلت حيّزاً كبيراً في الفكر الإسلامي حتى قال أبو الحسن الأشعري ما سل سيف في الإسلام بقدر ما سلّ على الإمامة إذ تباينت آراء الفرق الكلامية.
لقد جاءت هذه الدراسة لتسلط الضوء على موقف معتزلة البصرة من الإمام علي عليه السلام مع توضيح أدلتهم في هذا الجانب.
