أيها الموتى، أمنعكم من شتم الحياة، أيها الأحياء، أمنعكم من شتم الموت. أمنعكم أيضاً من كتابة الرسائل، كل ما ورثته من الحيرة فهو منها. لا أجد فيها ألفاظي وهي تنقر أوراقها، كما يفعل نقار الخشب بالخشب. إن كنتم فعلاً موتى، أن تجدوا شجرة سرو واحدة، تتخاطبون من حولها. والكتاب الغزير الورق، والكتاب الغزير الورق، لم تقرؤوا منه سوى صفحة واحدة، على غير العادة. والرعاة الذين يموتون عند الفجر، سيرافقونكم إلى أن تروا بنادقكم الصغيرة عرقانة. ستجدون أيضاً الأبواب القديمة التي كانت تقود إليكم. هذه نصيحتي: اسحبوا صوت الطائر من العشب، موتوا ولا تحيوا، حتى وإن طلب منكم ذلك، وإن امتثلتم كونوا راضين، احفروا هنا، ستتحدون مع شيء أعظم منكم. مع النور الذي كان يوقظكم عند ساعة الصباح. منذ عام وأنا هنا، لم أعد أسمع الضجة، ماذا حدث؟ هل جفت القوافل بعدما سالت منذ قرون، هل رحل البرابرة ولم يخلفوا سوى فقاعات قلقهم؟ أم أنهم انساقوا وراء العاصفة العظيمة، إلى ما وراء سور الصين (سور صينهم)؟ لقد طال الزمن، وخلف كل ذاهب قادم. هل ذهبوا لشاعرهم المريض، ساحرهم الذي سيشفى قريباً؟ طريقهم واضحة، تضيئها الخطى القديمة. وقلوبهم، في كل مرة، هي التي تبدأ بالخفقان.
