يضم الكتاب قصصاً يربطها موضوع واحد يصلح عنوانه أن يكون عنواناً لكل قصة فيه؛ (فأبو بلطة) بائع الأشياء القديمة يتوهم الثروة التي تخطئه، فلا يقدر على الوصول إليها، والطبيب في (العملية) يَيئس من حياة مريضه، فينجو، وتحطئ توقعاته. وبطل (بائع الحظ) تكاد تقتله أوهام التشاؤم. وفي (البطارية) يُجهد الأستاذ نفسه في التدريس للحصول على أموال أكثر. و(بائع الكلام) يوهم من حوله بتصرفاته الغريبة. وصاحب (البندقية) لا ينجو من الجنود إلا بعد أوهام شتى. والشيخ يحار (في بيت المومسات) اللواتي ظننه آتياً للخطيئة. والجد تدهمه (هموم العيد) لضيق ذات يده فيفرجها الله. ويخشى (أبو رياح المُتَوَّك) على كرامته أن تهان، فيتصرف تصرفات مضحكة. و(الأستاذ) يزعجه إحالته على لتقاعد، فيسعى إلى حلّ. ويكاد الرجل في (الخيط الأخير) يجد زوجة مناسبة فتفر منه، ويظن المزاوج في (الخوخات الثلاث) أنه وجد حلاً لمشكلته فتتردى أموره. ويطمع الجابي بالخطاط فيقول له (اكتب لي واواً) ليحصل على بعض المال. والمرأة في المطار تتهم رجلاً بـ (الوقاحة) وهو بريءٌ منها. والمدرس لا يدري أن (الصفعة) قد أنزلها بابن شخصية مهمة. ويقتتل رجلان كأنهما (الكبشان) من أجل امرأة. وأخيراً فإن (الصعود إلى الأسفل) يدمر العروسين.
