يجمع هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه، أخبار الأصمعي الأديب، اللغوي المشهور بعدما تناثرت في بطون الكتب ... ومع تناثرها هنا وهناك فقد جمعت فنوناً شتى وعلوماً مختلفة بين أدب ولغة وتاريخ وتفسير وأخبار وحديث. أما مؤلف الكتاب فهو "القاضي أبو محمد عبد الله بن أحمد الربعي المعروف بإبن زبر المتوفي سنة 329ه. جمع هذه الأخبار عن طريق شيوخه، عن شيخهم الأصمعي، ومن هنا جاءت أهمية الكتاب، لموضوعه من جهة ولاعتماده على أسانيد عالية من جهة أخرى.
يضم هذا الكتاب باقة منوعة من الموضوعات، منها اللغة المنقولة عن الأعراب، وعن كبار علماء اللغة وعن الشعراء ومنها الأخبار الأدبية اللطيفة الشيقة الممتعة، ومنها الأدب الرفيع، وكذلك الأخبار التاريخية: أخبار الخلفاء والأمراء والقواد والعلماء، فضلاً عن تفسير آيات من القرآن الكريم، وإيضاح لبيان من الحديث النبوي الشريف، إضافة إلى الأخبار المنقولة عن شيوخ الأصمعي وصلته بهم، وجميع ما ينقله من أخبار يسندها إلى أصحابها على طريقة المحدثين. كل هذا يجعل من كتاب "المنتقى من أخبار الأصمعي" سفراً أدبياً جامعاً يطلعنا على علم الأصمعي وموسوعيته ومقدرته الفائقة في نقل اللغة والأدب وعلوم العربية.
تأتي أهمية الوقوف على أخبار الأصمعي من كونه – أي الأصمعي – راوٍ للأخبار والتاريخ قبل تدوين التاريخ. فهو ينقل الوقائع والحروب والأحلاف في الجاهلية، والغزوات والفتوحات في العهد الإسلامي والأموي، وينقل أخبار القبائل وأنسابها ومجتمعاتها، وهو بذلك نقل معظم أخبار الجاهليين وأدبهم، وإن المعلقات نقلت أيضا عن طريقه أو بعضاً منها ... كذلك يعتبر الأصمعي من أئمة علم الجغرافية العربية، والباحث في كتب البلدان كمعجم البلدان والمسالك والممالك إلى آخر ذلك من تبحر في الشعر والأدب، فأصبح في عداد أكبر علماء العربية ...
