ينطلق المؤلف في كتابه هذا من وصية الخليفة الراشدي عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه الذي قال (استوصوا بأهل البادية خيراً فإنهم أصل العرب ومادة الإسلام) ثم عرج على ذكر حبه الشخصي للبادية لأنها المسرح الرحب الذي تفتحت به العبقريات العربية وأهلته لأن يحمل رسالة الله عز وجل إلى الناس كافة ففيها يتعلم المرء الصبر على المكاره وتحمل المشاق وتعلم الفروسية وطلاقة اللسان وصفاء الذهن، وكان هدفه من البحث دراسة العلاقة الإنسانية بين ماضي البادية بعراقته وحاضرها بأصالته ومقارنة عامة بين الماضي والحاضر. وهل استطاعت الحضارة بمناحيها المختلفة أن تؤثر في حياة البدوي. وهل دخلت إلى جوهره أم أنها لا تزال تحوم حوله إنها لم تؤثر بالقدر الذي حرفته عن حياته الأولى وهناك براهين لمسها المؤلف عند جولته في ربوع نجد والحجاز. فقد رأى القصر الحضاري بكل رونقه وبهائه وزخرفته. لكن كل ذلك لم يحرف البدوي عن أصالته فترى بيت الشعر شامخاً إلى جانبه بتواضع جم واعتزاز كبير و لا يحلو للبدوي استضافة ضيفه إلا فيه مجيباً بذلك تاريخه القديم وكأنه يقول لك أف للحضارة ومفرزاتها ونعم للصفاء والنقاء و يخطر في باله قول ميسون بنت حسان ابن بحدل الكلبية زوج الخليفة معاوية بن ابي سفيان وأم ولده يزيد عندما سكنت قصور دمشق فلم تغير من طبيعتها البدوية فتوجدت على بيت الشعر قائلة: لبيت تخفق الأرواح فيه أحب إلي من قصر منيف. و يتناول المؤلف في الكتاب بعض العادات الاجتماعية وتغيراتها. ويتعرض لما كتبه المستشرقون عن البادية وأهلها. وأخذ الكاتب في بحثه أربع قبائل هي عنزة وشمر ويام وتميم. ويبحث في تاريخ رؤساء تلك القبائل. ويخصص المؤلف فصلاً كاملاًَعن الشعراء الشباب في الجزيرة العربية. وخصص فصلاً عن النساء البدويات الشاعرات مع ذكر سيرة حياتهن.
