كتاب "التطبيق النحوي" كتاب يسدّ النقص الذي طال العهد به، وهو اقتصار الكتب التي تدرّس على شواهد خاصة، وأبيات معروفة الخلف عن السلف. ولهذا جاء هذا الكتاب متميزاً مما سواه من الكتب، لأنه حوى تطبيقات نحوية حسنة، على نصوص من حرّ الشعر وعيونه، إذا ألمّ بها القارئ وأحسن تفهمها فإنه يجد فيها زاداً وفيراً من النحو العربي، وما أشبه هذا الكتاب بحديقة فيحاء، متسعة الأرجاء طيبة الثمرات.
وقد استوعب المؤلفان بأسلوبهما العلمي وتناولهما الدقيق في هذه النصوص مختلف المسائل النحوية ووقفا على فوائد جمّة تنهج للدارس والمتعلم النهج السليم للتطبيق النحوي. ولهذا نرى أن الكتاب قد أخذ طابعاً علمياً مفيداً في تثبيت القواعد وتفسيرها لتثبت في الذهن ولتسهّل ما صعب منها، وقد أحسن المؤلفان في درس ما دقَّ من قواعد اللغة، وما انتشر في بطون الكتب من المسائل النحوية، وأجادا في تقديمها بطريقة تحبب إلى نفوس الطلاب قواعد اللغة، وتبعدهم عن اللبس الذي يقعون به أحياناً. وقد آثرا في النصوص التي وضعاها بين يدي الطلبة أن تكون قريبة من مستوى الطالب المتخصص، أي طالب قسم اللغة العربية، فهي نصوص اختارها المؤلفان من عصور الاحتجاج، وأرادا لها أن تناسب الغرض الذي جاءا بها لأجله. وجريا فيها على إعراب أبياتها إعراباً تفصيلياً، ملحقين بها تعاليق وإيضاحات الهدف منها ربط الإعراب بالقاعدة.
