عبر تجربة المؤلف "مجيد مرهون" الطويلة والمستمرة والتي استغرقت أكثر من ثلاثين سنة في دراسة وتطبيق وتأليف وتدريس الموسيقى، ومن خلال متابعته وملاحظته المتواصلة والمواكبة للتدريس تبين له على وجه خاص أن القصور في فهم الموسيقى فهماً حقيقياً يكمن أساساً في عدم تمكن الشباب في فهم الناحية النظرية والقابلة للتطبيق مثل ضبط القيمة الزمنية الفعلية لكل نغمة، أو كيفية تكوين الجملة الموسيقية، أو أن الجمل الموسيقى تتكون أساساً من فكرات موسيقية ومن هذه الجمل تتكون الأدوار والفقرات والأقسام والفواصل.
كما وتبين له أيضاً عدم الوضوح في فهم تقابل النغم ومحاسنه وعدم ممارسة الهارمونية بصورة مدروسة واضحة، كما وأن التوزيع الموسيقي وتناول الآلات يأتي بصورة عشوائية بلا دراسة واضحة. ومن هنا ارتأى المؤلف وضع هذا الكتاب الذي وضع فيه الكثير من الالتباسات والاشتباهات التي يقع فيها أثناء الممارسة العملية للموسيقى، وقد وضع كتابه وفق ترتيب مرقم وذلك بقصد التسهيل في عملية التلقين والاستزادة.
