حياتها
سويّة مع أختها الوحيدة الروائية والمؤرخة كاثرين جلبرت مردوخ كبرت اليزابيث في مزرعة شجرة عيد الميلادِ ضمن عائلة صغيرة في كونيكتيكت. درست في جامعة نيويورك وتخرّجت في 1991 في اختصاص علمِ السياسة، وبعدها عاشت حياة متشردة بكل ما تعنيه الكلمة من معان فعملت كطباخة ونادلة،. تجاربها كطباخة في مزرعة رجل ظهرت بقوة في كلتا القصص القصيرة وكتابها، الرجل الأمريكي الأخير (فايكنك 2002).

نشرت دار نشر (المحترم) مجموعة قصص قصيرة لجلبرت بعنوان (حجّاج)عام 1993، تحت عنوان بارزِ “ ظهور لأول مرّة لكاتبِة أمريكيِة ” حيث كانت أول كاتبة لقصّة قصيرة غير منشورة تظهر لأول مرّة في (المحترم) منذ الكاتب (نورمان مايلر). قادها هذا إلى عملِ ثابت كصحفية لعدد من المجلات الوطنية.

إليزابيث في العقد الثالث من عمرها، تسكن في منزل فاخر مع زوج محب يريد أن ينشئ عائلة. ولكن هذا المشروع ليس من ضمن أولوياتها، فيحصل الطلاق المر لتصفع تردداته العنيفة إليزابيث، التي تنهض بعد وقت محطمة ولكن مصممة على البحث عن كل ما تفتقده. هنا يبدأ البحث. في روما تغرق في ملذات الطعام والحفلات فيزداد وزنها عشرين كيلوغرماً دفعة واحدة. في الهند تنير الهداية روحها وهي تحف أرض المعابد. وأخيراً في بالي تكتشف على يدي عراف سقطت أسنانه الطريق إلى السلام الذي يقودها إلى الحب. نحن الأن امام رواية من أشهر الروايات العالمية ، فقد بيع منها أكثر من 2 مليون نسخة كما ان الرواية تحولت إلى فيلم سنمائى وفامت بدور البطلة الممثلة "جوليا روبرتس" تنطلق الكاتبة إثر تجربة زواج فاشلة في مغامرة حول العالم باحثة عن ذاتها وروحها. يدفعها يأسها إلى إيطاليا، حيث تغرق في طيبات مطابخها وتنغمس في صداقات أبناءها. بعد ذلك تنطلق إلى الهند لتتسمَّر ساعات متأملة في أسرار الكون والكينونة. من هناك تنطلق إلى أندونيسيا لتعيش تجربتيها السابقتين مجتمعتين على يد حكيم متمرس حيث تكتشف الحب الحقيقي
