هذا كتاب ذهب فيه المصنف إلى إيقاع الأقناع، وإمتاع النفوس والأسماء، باتساق الخبر عن سيرة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وذكر نسبه وصفته ومبعثه، وكثير من خصائصه، وإعلام نبوته ومغازيه، وأيامه من لدن مولده إلى أن استأثر به وقبض روحه الطيبة إليه، مقدماً لذلك ما يجب تقديمه، ومتمماً من ذكر أوليته المباركة بلداً ومحتداً، بما يحسن علمه وتعليمه، ملخصاً جميعه من كتاب الله الذي هو أحسن القصص وأصدقها ومن كتب أئمة هذا الشأن ككتاب محمد بن إسحاق، وكتاب موسى بن عقبة.
وقد استدرك المصنف ما في هذه الكتب من استفاضة أو نقص فعمد إلى تكملته ببعض من الموضوعات كالأنساب واللغات والأشعار كما لا يخلو الكتاب من بعض المعجزات والمغازي التي مَنّ الله بها رسوله الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم.وقد ضمنه أيضاً ذكر لمغازي الخلفاء الثلاثة الأول رضي الله عنهم، منتحلاً من كتاب أبي القاسم ومن غيره صفوها ولبابها لتنتظم الفائدتان معاً، ويكون الخبر عن مغازي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ومغازي خلفائه الذين بهديهم الائتمام، في مكان واحد مجتمعاً، وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً إذ تجلى عمل المحقق فيه بتخريج آيات القرآن الكريم، والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، كما عني بالتعليق على بعض المواضيع بالكتاب، وشرح بعض الألفاظ الغريبة.
