ثمة أدلة على وجود حضارة راقية، لكنها لم تعرف الكتابة والتدوين، ترقى إلى الألف الثامن قبل الميلاد، في هضاب آسيا الصغرى فعلى سبيل المثال أظهرت التنقيبات الأثرية في موقع شطل هويوك معالم بيوت متقنة البناء، ورسوم جدران باهرة الألوان وتماثيل ومنحوتات معبرة تعود للحضارة الحثية. وقد عثر على مستودع لحفظ الوثائق وتتألف محفوظات الدولة الحثية من وثائق تاريخية كحوليات الملوك ومعاهدات الدولة والمراسلات الرسمية والقوانين، ومن وثائق دينية تتعلق بأصول الشعائر والطقوس وتحتوي على وصف مسهب للأعياد الدينية والمناسبات الروحية. ومن جملة الوثائق الدينية حكايات وأساطير وخرافات يعرض الكتاب عدداً منها. غير أن هذا النوع من النصوص يدخل في باب الأدب رغم الرداء الديني الذي أسبغ عليه. والأساطير التي يحكيها الكتاب تحمل العناوين التالية: اسطورة الأفعى التنين ايلويانكا، اسطورة اختفاء وظهور الألهة تيليبنو، قصة القمر الذي هوى من السماء، تعاويذ كامروشيبا، اسطورة الصراع على ملكوت السماء، انشودة اليكومي، من حلقة أساطير كوماربي، اسطورة عشيرتو وبعل ، النص الحثي لملحمة جلجامش، حكاية أبو ولديه، حكاية البقرة وإله الشمس واللقيط، حكاية الصياد كيشي، صلاة الطاعون الثانية لموشيللي الثاني، ابتهال الملك مورشيلي الى ارينا إلهة الشمس.
