إن الرحلة في عالم صلاح أبو سيف وألفريد فرج وفاروق خورشيد، تعني البحث والتنقيب والرؤية والاطلاع على جيل بأكمله... هو جيل ما بين الثورتين، فبين ثورة 1919 وقيام ثورة 1952 ولد جيل أدبي/فني... عاش طفولته وبدايات وعيه ثم تخرجه من قاعات الدرس إلى مسرح الحياة العملية في تلك الفترة الممتدة منذ بداية العشرينات وحتى نهاية الأربعينات، هذا الجيل ما زال يهب الحياة الثقافية في الثمانينات ما يختزنه من معان وأفكار... وإذا كانت فكرة الجيل تثير الكثير من الملاحظات والمآخذ في علم الاجتماع الأدبي؛ فالمؤلف هنا سيحاول قدر استطاعته تحديد هذا الجيل بالاعتماد وعلى معايير موضوعية (أهمها اختلاف زاوية الرؤية عند هؤلاء الأدباء عن الأجيال التي سبقتهم أو تجديدهم في الشكل أو تنويعهم تنويعاً حقيقياً في المضمون) وفي طريق رحلته في هذا الكتاب كان لا بد له من أن يقرأ أثر الخليفة التاريخية والاجتماعية على أعمالهم الإبداعية وأعمال جيلهم ومن هنا عرض للتحولات السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية البارزة في الفترة ما بين الثورتين والهدف من هذه الرحلة هو إلقاء الضوء على ثلاثة مبدعين في المسرح والسينما والرواية والأدب الشعبي لقراءة تضاريس شخصياتهم ضمن المكان والزمان اللذان تفاعلت الشخصية معهما.
