على الرغم من أن قارة أمريكا الجنوبية تشبه شقيقتها الشمالية في كثير من النواحي الجغرافية الطبيعية والاقتصادية، فالتباينات بينها واضحة، فهما تعتبران إلى حد كبير متساويتي المساحة (أمريكا الشمالية 9,4000,000 ميلاً مربعاً، وأمريكا الجنوبية 7,200,000 ميلاً مربعاً) كما أن لكل منهما الشكل المثلثي قاعدته في الشمال الشرقي، وضلعاه شبه المتساويين يلتقيان في الجنوب، وإن الإطار الخارجي للقارة الشمالية يعتبر أكثر تعرجاً، وتوجد في القسم الغربي لكل منهما سلاسل الكورديليرا ذات التكوين الجيولوجي الحديث، التي تبتعد في بعض أجزائها عن بعضها لتحصر هضاباً واسعة.
وبصورة عامة يمكن تقسيم العالم الأمريكي إلى ثلاثة أقسام: عالم أمريكا الشمالية الذي يتمثل في أوضح صورة في كل من كندا والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، والذي تظهر فيه بصورة جلية حضارات العالم الأوروبي في شماله الاسكندناوي إلى جنوبه البحر أوسطي.ثم هناك بعد ذلك عالم أمريكا الوسطى، الذي يمكن تقسيمه حضارياً إلى قسمين يعرف حالياً باسم البرزخ الأمريكي، والآخر يعرف باسم جزر الهند الغربية، أي ما يمكن تسميتها باسم الأرض الرئيسية، والأرض الهامشية، ثم يأتي بعد ذلك أمريكا الجنوبية بحضارتها الإسبانية والبرتغالية.
في هذا الإطار تأتي الدراسة حول جغرافية أقسام العالم الجديد. وتقتصر الدراسة الجغرافية على كتلتي العالم الجديد البارزتين وهما أمريكا الشمالية وأمريكا الجنوبية، وهمزة الوصل بينهما والمتمثلة في أمريكا الوسطى. وتتضح هذه السمات بمقارنة جغرافية بين ما تتميز به كل من أمريكا الشمالية وأمريكا الجنوبية من تشابه وتباين جعل أحدهما تبز الأخرى في سماتها الجغرافية، وتعرض الدراسة في جزئها الثاني لأهم السمات الجغرافية والحضارية لأمريكا الوسطى التي تشمل على المكسيك و"البرزخ الأمريكي" من ناحية وجزر الهند الغربية من ناحية أخرى.
