هذه دراسة موضوعها الصرف العربي والدرس الحديث؛ وهي دراسة للصرف العربي-أو بالأحرى لعدد من قضاياه-في ضوء أحد مناهج الدرس اللغويّ الحديث. وهذه الدراسة خلاصة بحثين أعدهما الباحث عام 2000م أحدهما يحمل عنوان: "دراسة البنية الصرفية في ضوء اللسانيات الوصفية: تحليل ومناقشة، وهو البحث المرجعي الذي تقدم به للجنة العلمية الدائمة بجمهورية مصر العربية ضمن أعمال الترقية إلى درجة أستاذ مساعد (مشارك). والبحث الثاني بعنوان: "دور علم الأصوات في تفسير قضايا الإعلال في العربية من منظور وصفي".
وما تسعى إليه هذه الدراسة هو إلقاء الضوء الكاشف على الوصفيين بعامة، والعرب منهم بخاصة، والوقف على منهجهم في الدرس الصرفي والنظر إلى قضاياه. وتناول عدد من قضايا الصرف العربي في ضوء اللسانيات الوصفية. وبيان دور علم الأصوات في تفسير قضايا الصرف العربي، وعلى وجه خاص قضايا الإعلال، وذلك من منظور وصفي.
وفي سبيل تحقيق هذه الأهداف تمّ توزيع الدراسة على مقدمة، وتوطئة، وثلاثة أبواب. ففي التوطئة حديث عن اللسانيات بعامة (طبيعتها، نشأتها، تطورها)، وفي الباب الأول حديث عن الاتجاه الوصفي (طبيعته، نشأته، تطوره)؛ وجاء في فصلين تحدث الفصل الأول عن اللسانيات الوصفية (طبيعتها، نشأتها، تطورها)، وتحدث في الفصل الثاني عن الوصفيين العرب وظهور المنهج الوصفي في العربية. وتناول الباب الثاني دراسة الدرس الصرفي من منظور وصفي، وذلك في أربعة فصول، تحدث الفصل الأول عن طبيعة الدرس الصرفي الحديث من وجهة النظر الوصفية الحديثة، وتحدث الفصل الثاني عن الصرف العربي في ميزان الوصفيين، وتحدث الفصل الثالث عن أقسام الكلام العربي في ضوء المنهج الوصفي، وتحدث الفصل الرابع عن الوصفيين وعدد من قضايا الصرف العربي. وأما الباب الثالث وهو بعنوان (الصرف وعلم الأصوات من منظور وصفي)، فقد جعل في فصلين؛ أولهما بعنوان (علاقة الدرس الصرفي بعلم الأصوات من وجهة نظر علماء اللسانيات الوصفية)، والفصل الثاني بعنوان (دور علم الأصوات في تفسير قضايا الإعلال في العربية في ضوء المنهج الوصفي)، وختم الكتاب بخاتمة لخّصت أهم النتائج التي خرجت بها من هذه الدراسة، يليها قائمة بأهم المصادر والمراجع التي جاءت في الكتاب.
