لقد فهم الإنسان بشكل أفضل بأن العالم يتألف من مجموعة من المساحات المتشكلة بواسطة الضوء. أما في الفترة الذهبية للامبراطورية الرومانية فإننا نرى في ظهور اللوحات الجدارية بحيث تظهر الأحداث بطريقة إرادية وبانتباه وتأثيرات للظل وللضوء.
بعد قرن ونصف اكتشف رمبراندت التدرج الضوئي في اللوحة (الضوء الخافت) فقال بأن الضوء يخترق اللوحة إلى الأماكن الأكثر ظلمة. أما جورج دولاتور ففي نفس الفترة أصبح الساحر الحقيقي للضوء وشاعر الظل نقلاً عن الكركد، وفيما بعد يأتي فلاسكينر وريبرا وزرياران والفنانون الهولنديون أمثال بيتر وفريد. كلهم يقولون بأهمية الضوء الأساسية والتي تصبح في بعض الأحيان موضوع العمل. فهو التركيب النغمي أو الفكرة لإخضاع موضوع اللوحة إلى توزيع الأماكن المضاءة والمظلمة. وفي نصف القرن الأخير مجموعة من الفنانين وجدت الانطباعية التي قلبت وجددت كل النظريات السابقة تحت شعار "اللون هو الضوء" فهو يلعب مع الانعكاسات ويجعل الظلال شفافة، ويزيل من لوحة الوان الرسام الألوان المظلمة.
يأتي الكتاب في هذا الإطار حيث يبحث في الأضواء والظلال ويقدم للهاوي الانطباعي مبادئ عامة يتمكن من خلالها التعبير بواسطة الضوء وظلال التعبير عن القساوة والقوة، وعن الفرح والحزن والقلق والراحة.
