ستيفان زفايك من أبرع من أجاد التحليل النفسي في كتابته، وقد تناول في هذه الرواية تحول شاب أصر والده أستاذ الكلية، على تثقيفه في إحدى الجامعات. وكان هذا الابن المستهتر العنيد لا يطاوع والده لأنه يفضل نشاطاً آخر، علاوة على انصرافه إلى اللهو والعبث، وحين انتقل إلى جامعة أخرى، بناءً على إلحاح أبيه، أثر عليه أسلوب أستاذه الضليع البليغ، بصورة سحرية، قلبت نفوره من العلم إلى تعشق الأدب. والفضل يعود إلى بيان هذا الأستاذ الجامعي، وغزارة معرفته، وفصاحة إلقائه وطلاوة أحاديثه. كل هذا جعل التلميذ المرتد يحرض أستاذه على استعادة همته لتأليف كتاب جديد عن الأدب العالمي، يشمل شكسبير وموليير، لكن هذا العمل توقف فجأة على اثر مغامرة اضطرت الفتى الأبي الابتعاد عن الجو المغري الذي استأنس به.
إن هذه الرواية محاولة نادرة لسبر أعماق النفس الإنسانية بأهوائها ونزعاتها، ولا ريب أن نظيرها في الأدب العالمي قليل حقاً.
