التداولية ليست علماً لغوياً محضاً، علماً يكتفي بوصف وتفسير البنى اللغوية ويتوقف عند حدودها وأشكالها الظاهرة، بل هي علم جديد للتواصل الإنساني، يدرس الظواهر اللغوية في مجال الاستعمال، ويتعرف على القدرات الإنسانية للتواصل اللغوي، ومن هنا تسميتها: "علم الاستعمال اللغوي".
