يجد الباحث بين دفتي هذا الكتاب فصولاً من البحث اختار لها الدكتور عبد الجبار الرفاعي من العناوين عنوان: "رهانات الحداثة". وهي فصول إذا ما هو حقق أمرها وجد أنها أقرب ما تكون إلى فصول منتزعة من الكتاب الواحد -أعني: "كتاب الحداثة". هذا الذي قد يجهد صاحبه العمر كله في تصنيفه فلا يستقل لوحده بتأليفه.
إنما شأن "كتاب الحداثة"، على التدقيق، أنه ذاك السفر العظيم الذي ما فتئ مفكرو العرب يكتبونه، بضرب من الكتابة موصول، منذ النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر إلى اليوم. إلا أنها كتابة لازمها المحو كل الملازمة. إذ ثمة من مفكري العرب من كان يكتب في "كتاب الحداثة" بأبدع كتابة تكون، متأثراً في ذلك بهذا الأمر السحري العجب الذي صرنا لا نجد له من الأسماء اسماً نسميه به سوى "جاذبية الحداثة"، وثمة منهم من كان يمحي "كتاب الحداثة" بأسوأ محو يكون، مسترشداً في محوه هذا بما صرنا ندعوه "مقاومة التقليد". وكأن الأوائل كانوا يريدون بذلك أن يطرحوا بالعرب إلى مجاهل الحداثة التطويح الذي لا تردد فيه، حتى يصير شأنهم في ذلك شأن أولئك البحارة البرتغاليين الذين كانوا يودعون أهلهم -كأنه الوداع الأخير- حين يزمعون أمرهم على الصيد في "بحر الظلمات". وكأن الثواني كانوا يريدون بمحوهم الذي تاستحدثوه في "كتاب الحداثة" أن يشدوا العرب إلى التراث شدا، وذلك بوصفه صمام أمانهم المعول عليه في مستقبلهم، بل وأن يعودوا بهم الرجعى إلى ما مضى، غير واضعين "التقليد" موضع الأمر الذي استدبروه لا استقبلوه- كما كان ينبغي أن يفعل به، وكما يفرض منطق الواقع ذلك، وكما تخبر بذلك تجربة الأمم التي سبقتنا في استقبال الحداثة واستدبار القدامة.
