فالعمارة إذاً هي أم الفنون والمعمارى بالتالي هو أبو الفنانين ذلك لأن المبنى هو الذي يهيئ للفنون المختلفة مكانها ويحدد أهدافها ويلتزم المعماري بمبدأ الملائمة بين أشكال تلك العناصر ووظائفها في المبنى ثم بينه وبين وظيفته في المجتمع الإنساني بحيث ينعكس آثار ذلك على طراز المبنى ووظيفته وعصره وموطنه وفكرة إخضاع المبنى لأغراض الاستعمال كانت من العوامل التي لعبت أهم دور في تطوير فن العمارة.
والبلدان العربية التي تعيش مرحلة من مراحل نموها المتطور في النواحي العمرانية والمعمارية توجب أهمية وجود المراجع المعمارية العربية لتسهيل عمل المعماري، وهذا الكتاب هو الجزء الأول من سلسلة موسوعة المسابقات المعمارية التي ستحتوي على إحدى عشر جزءاً.
