كتب معظم أبواب هذا الكتاب كمقالات صحافية أو مقابلات إذاعية في فترات سابقة حملت هموم ورواسب الحرب الطاحنة التي دارت في لبنان في حقبة السبعينات وما تلاها بجانب التشخيص الجاد للحالة اللبنانية اقتصادياً وسياسياً وتربوياً والتركيز على البحوث العلمية. ومع ذلك فإن قراءة موضوعية الآن لما جرى خلال تلك الفترة وأكدتها الأحداث التالية تؤكد للدكتور سركيس زعيتر صاحب هذه المقالات الحقائق التالية: 1-أن لبنان استطاع تجاوز آثار تلك الحرب بفضل الانتماء الوطني العام لشعبه وأبنائه وتمسكهم بمبدأ العيش المشترك وصيانة مؤسساتهم الدستورية وحمايتهم لها. 2-أن الدور السوري في لبنان كان حاسماً في الحفاظ على وحدة لبنان واستمرار حياته ودوره العربي والإقليمي والعالمي. 3-كل التجاوزات والميليشوية سواءً أكانت لبنانية أو فلسطينية أمعنت بتدمير لبنان، ومن الموقع الوطني يجب رفض كل هذه التجاوزات والمماراسات وليس من أي موقع آخر سواءً كان طائفياً أو مذهبياً أو عنصرياً. 4-إن التعويل على الدور الأميركي الإيجابي لبنانياً وعرياً وعالمياً هو وهم وسراب نظراً لما يحمله هذا الدور من تحالف وتبني كاملين للموقف الإسرائيلي وتطابق في وحدة الأهداف بينهما. 5-في تشخيص الحالة اللبنانية لما تحمل من سلبيات تطال النظام السياسي العام وتحديداً الطبقة السياسية فالحل بالنهاية هو المزيد من الوعي الوطني، والمزيد من الحرية، والمزيد من الممارسة الديموقراطية. ويمكن القول بأنه وفي غمرة هذا الاختلاف بالرؤية للواقع اللبنانية أو العربي وبالنظرة إلى الدور الأميركي في المنطقة والعالم، وبالنظر إلى هذا كله فإن كثير من القضايا والآراء والمقترحات التي أوردها الدكتور زعتر في باطن هذا الكتاب هي مثار للجدل وللنقاش وللحوار وقد تختلف أنت وكقارئ مع الكثير منها سواءً في توقيت طرحها أو في الآراء حولها أو في الاستنتاجات، إلا أنك، وكمراقب للوضع العام، لا بد إلا أن تقدر ما قدمه الدكتور زعتر من آراء ومن جهد في سبيلا لوصول إلى مساهمة جدية تحاول الوصول إلى نتيجة أفضل في واقع سياسي محلي وإقليمي ودولي معاش.
