احتل شعر العقيدة الذي يدرسه المؤلف مكانة بارزة في تاريخ الإسلام، وكان بمثابة المنبر الملتزم، والصوت الواعي لروح الدين الجديد، تغنّى به المجاهدون، واستمدوا من معانيه زادا ألهمهم الصبر والثبات، ودفعهم إلى البذل والعطاء، ومن يتصفح المواقف التي مرّ بها الإسلام يجد أن صوت الشعر كان واضحاً فيها، واكب مراحلها، وحرص على تسجيل أحداثها؛ ونظراً لضياع الكثير من الشعر المتعلق بأحداث الفترة، وما تعرضت له من وضع وإنتحال، فقد حاول البحث الإبتعاد قدر الإمكان عن جميع النصوص الشعرية التي يعتريها الشك، وتحوم حول صحتها الشبهات.
وقد اشتمل البحث على تمهيد وأربعة فصول؛ حاول الكاتب في التمهيد التعرف على الأصول الفكرية والدينية التي سادت التفكير العربي قبل الإسلام، وتشعب الفصل الأول "شعر العقيدة وإتجاهاته في عصر صدر الإسلام" إلى محورين: تناول المحور الأول منه دراسة شعر العقيدة، وانصرف المحور الثاني من الفصل لدراسة إتجاهات الشعر، واختص الفصل بدراسة "القيم التي طرحها شعر العقيدة والإتجاهات الجديدة في أغراض الشعر الإسلامي"، وقد توزع البحث فيه على قسمين: تناول القسم الأول منه، المعاني والقيم التي أفرزها الشعر، أما القسم الثاني من الفصل، فقد تطرق إلى بيان أبرز الإتجاهات الجديدة في أغراض الشعر الإسلامي؛ وتكفل الفصل الثالث بدراسة "نماذج من شعراء العقيدة" وقد وقع الإختيار على أربعة شعراء كان صوت العقيدة واضحاً في نفوسهم، ومسموعاً في شعرهم، وهم "كعب بن مالك" و"عبد الله بن رواحة" و"عاصم بن عمرو التميمي" و"نافع بن الأسود"؛ أما الفصل الرابع والأخير "الظواهر الفنية في شعر العقيدة" فهو دراسة فنية، تناول فيها أبرز الخصائص الفنية لهذا الشعر.
